Chapter 13

“Bad karma,” Maggie muttered, worrying her bottom lip so hard Logan thought she'd draw blood.

“What do you mean?”

She spread her arms akimbo. “What goes around comes around. You have to live with the choices you make, good and bad.”

“How'd you get to be so smart?” he murmured, knowing he'd have to tell her everything now – everything from the start to the finish. Definitely the important things, what could affect her and Angel. That included all the people that were after them.

He finished nearly forty minutes later, during which Maggie never said a word, although her emerald eyes intermittently darkened like rich jungle foliage and lightened like white-foamed ocean waves with her changing emotions.

When he'd finished, they sat for several long moments before either of them said anything.

“So, there you have it, Maggie-girl. That's the whole of me, and it isn't a very pretty picture I've painted for you.”

“Bad karma,” she repeated, nodding solemnly.

“I'm afraid you have the right of it.”

She sat with her hands clasped between her knees, her uniform skirt bunched up around her thighs. Both socks now drooped sadly on her slender calves. “It's not like I'm surprised or anything,” she offered, hunching her shoulders and inspecting her nails. Bitten to the quick, he noticed. “I knew you'd done some bad things.”

“Ay, that I have. Verra bad things.”

“Did you ever ... kill a baby?”

“Never.”

“A child?”

“No.”

“Even on accident?”

“Not even by accident.”

Her eyes narrowed and she scanned his face, looking for the truth of his words, he guessed. “A woman? Did you ever hurt a woman?”

Logan hesitated. How to explain to her the difference between the image of the woman she likely carried in her imagination, perhaps a mother or grandmother, and a female caught up in the kind of business he was in? “Never one that didn't come at me first,” he said at last. “And never if I could do otherwise.”

“Okay.” She took a long, deep breath. “Okay,” she repeated. “Let's make a plan.”

Logan couldn't help laughing at her assumption of partnership. He looked down at the remaining pictures in his lap before putting them aside. All were pencil drawings, very gutsy and provocative scenes from New York – and not the pristine part of the city either.

He felt the raw swell of something he didn't recognize at the moment.

“Well, come on,” she urged, rising and waving toward him as he sat staring at the sketches. “If someone's trying to kill you, we've gotta get out of here.”

“No, not yet,” Logan answered as he fumbled to put the pictures back in the portfolio. “You and Angel must stay here until I get more information about the blond woman who's been following you, find out how much she knows, and why she's been surveilling you so long.”

Maggie gazed at him thoughtfully and finally took the portfolio out of his hands. “All right,” she agreed, her voice low and hoarse. She spoke with confidence. “These will be safer with me. When you've got the plan ready, come back and get us.
